Monday’s Public Art class at Orange Beach Arts Center’s After School Arts Program (ASAP) recently presented their design concepts for a fiberglass dog that, when completed, will be donated to the City’s Unleashed at Orange Beach Dog Park. Under the guidance of local artist and instructor Belinda Butler, the class of 10 first through sixth graders divided into teams to create five different designs.
After working on their designs for several weeks, the teams presented their dog-gone ideas to a jury. The oral presentations included stories about the dog in the design and the students’ thoughts on the appropriateness of the given design for its intended location.
“The children captured perfectly the emotional connections we have with our pets,” stated Wanda Price, OBAC coordinator. “The planning and thought that went into their presentations was impressive.”
Monday’s Public Art class will continue with this project in the fourth term of After School Arts Program which begins January 5th 2011. The students will eventually make a formal presentation of the completed dog to the city.
