Orange Beach Buzzz: Yolanda on the Island

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — The community is buzzing in many directions.  The Stephen Baker Sea, Sand and Stars Science and Nature Center at Orange Beach Elementary School is open this week only, June 9-13,  from 9am – 1pm FREE to the public. Volunteer as a greeter during this program by calling SSS at 981-5690.    

Ocean Camp at Bear Point Community Center includes Lego Camp for ages 5-12 from June 17-20, Dolphin Explorers Camp June 24-27.   

Vacation Bible School at Orange Beach United Methodist Church for ages 4-12 is June 23-27.  Registration online at www.orangebeachumc.org. 

Join Orange Beach Wind and Water Learning Center celebrate the 14th Anniversary of Summer Sailstice which is a global holiday celebrating sailing. Contact Wind and Water about this celebration and other Summer activities for young and old at 251-981-6020.

Last week Red Mountain Entertainment added Jake Owen Days of Gold Tour with special guest Parmalee and the Cadillac Three to the 2014 C-Spire concert series for August 22nd at Wharf Amphitheater.

Congratulations to Gulf Shores High School student Alex Odom for placing third in the county’s Scholar’s Bowl All-stars, first chair trombone in the band, and highest ACT score in Sophomore Class.  He will be missed on the island as he pursues his academic goals as a junior entering Alabama School of Math and Science this Fall.

Another Broken Egg announcing a new restaurant oepning in Orange Beach is a great addition to the economic viability of our community.   

Mark your calendar to vote in the primary run-off election on July 15. 

Orange Beach women, Audra DeBlieux and Pam Reese are now Smart Street Defender instructors and will be offering classes to area women soon.  

The Governor appointed Al Thompson of Bay Minette as our area representative to the Alabama State Board of Education. 

The Coastal Art Center of Orange Beach has scheduled a preschool (ages 4 and 5) creative workshop in Painting on June 25.  To register for this program, schedule glass blowing or pottery throwing classes call 251-981- ARTS. 

Ocean Eddies opened on the lower level of The Wharf. Slap Happies Sammiches has opened on Perdido Beach Boulevard at the previous location of Tipseas. No local’s night during the Summer but several are meeting on Thursdays at Pleasure Island Tiki Bar at Sportsman Marina on Thursday’s at 6:00 pm to plan future local’s nights.  

Back on Track Chiropractic and Orange Beach Helicopter Tours at Caribe had ribbon cuttings in May.
