Orange Beach City Schools has climbed to the top tier of Alabama’s academic rankings, earning recognition as one of the highest-performing districts in the state after posting some of the largest proficiency gains in recent years according to a news release.
According to new statewide results from the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama, the district now ranks second overall in proficiency among Alabama’s 153 traditional and charter school systems. A total of 81% of Orange Beach students in grades 3 through 8 scored proficient across math, English language arts and science on the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program.
The district claimed the top spot in science proficiency, ranking first in the state after moving up from third place last year. Math students rose from third to second, while English language arts jumped from seventh to fourth. Overall, proficiency levels increased by 9% in ELA, 10% in math and 19% in science over the past three years.
“We are extremely proud of these results,” Superintendent Randy Wilkes said in the release. “To see our students rank first in the state in science proficiency is a testament to their curiosity, effort and the power of our hands-on, real-world approach to learning.”
Wilkes pointed to double-digit math proficiency gains across multiple grade levels and noted that some sub-areas in English language arts reached 90% proficiency.
“These achievements place Orange Beach City Schools among the top systems in Alabama and affirm that our relentless pursuit of excellence is paying dividends,” he said.
Elementary Principal Dr. Mary Catherine Law credited a holistic learning model that extends beyond the classroom.
“Our students are completely immersed in their education,” Law said. “Whether in the classroom, exploring the Sea, Sand, and Stars Environmental Learning Center, partnering with Coastal Resources or participating in enrichment programs in the field, our students are learning everywhere they go. This holistic approach ensures that learning is meaningful, relevant and unforgettable.”
Middle and High School Principal Chris Shaw said the collaborative culture between teachers and students drives results.
“Engagement in the classroom makes all the difference,” Shaw said. “When students and teachers work together, challenging one another and supporting one another, achievement follows. This success reflects the commitment of our educators and the drive of our students.”
