Orange Beach concerts abound this season

With most of the oil gone from the beach, tourists are back, business is booming, and summertime along the Gulf Coast is going to rock and roll with star-studded concerts lined up for the next several months.

Beach Boys – Saturday, May 14 at The Wharf Amphitheatre, 7 p.m.

Few groups last for 50 years, but “Good Vibrations” of this Hawthorne, Calif., band has been entertaining audiences in beach fashion since 1961.

So what better way to celebrate the endless string of hits from The Beach Boys than to join them for a concert at the beach?

Bruce Johnston, along with original members Mike Love, Al Jardine and Brian Wilson will take the stage, performing many of their 36 Top 40 hits, the most by an American rock band.

Hangout Music Festival – Friday thru Sunday, May 20-22

Would you like to rock and roll all weekend long? The second annual Hangout Music Festival will bring in music fans from every state in the union. With well-known acts such as Paul Simon, Foo Fighters and Widespread Panic, this year’s edition is sure to be a music fan favorite. Other artist scheduled include the black Keys, My Morning Jacket, Flamin Lips, Cee Lo Green, Primus, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, Girl Talk, Ween Matisyahu, Warren Haynes Band, Umphrey’s McGee, Slightly Stoopid, Drive-By Truckers, Amos Lee, Old Crow Medicine Show, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Galactic, Xavier Rudd, Minue The Bear, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Portugal the Man, Beats Antique, Dead Confederate, Johathan Tyler & Northern Lights, Easy Star All-Stars, Mariachi El Bronx, Truth & Salvage Co, Kristy Lee, Civil Twilight, Rich Aucoin, A Thousand Horses, Jon Black Cas Haley and Roman Street.

Kenny Chesney – Saturday, May 21 at The Wharf Amphitheatre, 7 p.m.

With 14 gold albums and more than 30 Billboard Top 10 singles, the popular country music superstar will bring his traveling road show to town. The four-time Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year, has been pumping out hits since 1994 such as “She’s Got It All,” “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy,” “There Goes My Life” and “The Good Stuff.”

Born and raised in Luttrell, Tennessee, Chesney is will no-doubt fill up The Wharf Amphitheatre.

Lynyrd Skynyrd with ZZ Top – Sunday, May 29 at The Wharf Amphitheatre, 7 p.m.

Rockers from the 70s will get their fill of tunes from days gone by with Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top.

With only one remaining original member, Lynyrd Skynyrd is best known in these parts as the band that recorded Alabama’s unofficial state song “Sweet Home Alabama.” Originating in Jacksonville, Fla., Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band continues to electrify audiences across the nation with their southern rock standards such as “What’s Your Name,” “Gimme Three Steps,” and “Freebird.”

Many fans still remember the 1977 plane crash in Mississippi that claimed the lives of original members Ronnie Van Sant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines.

Johnny Van Zant, younger brother of Ronnie, has been the front man for Skynyrd since 1987 and will be front and center at The Wharf when the band hits the stage.

Joining Lynyrd Skynyrd will be the sharp-dressed southern blues-rock trio of  Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill, known to rock fans as ZZ Top.

From “Sharp Dressed Man” to “Legs,” this Houston-based band has been entertaining for four decades.

Willie Nelson’s Country Throwdown – Sunday, June 5 at The Wharf Amphitheatre, 3 p.m.

A country music icon, 78-year-old Texan Willie Hugh Nelson will ride into town bringing a posse of friends with him for an afternoon and evening of fun.  Joining Nelson will be other country musicians including Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert, Craig Campbell, Lukas Nelson and Drake White.

Def Leppard & Heart – Sunday, June 19 at The Wharf Amphitheatre, 8 p.m.

Stepping back to the ever-popular music style of the 1980s, English rock band Def Leppard makes their first trip to Orange Beach. After selling more than 65 million albums worldwide, Def Leppard is one of only five rock bands that has had two projects to sell over 10 million copies in the United States.

Attendees at this concert are sure to hear popular tunes such as “Photograph,” “Love Bites,” and “Pour Some Sugar On Me.”

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson have been traveling with their band Heart since 1973.  With a wide range of fans from several genres including pop, folk and hard rock, Heart has enjoyed numerous accolades on the music scene. Having sold more than 35 million records, the band is most known for tunes such as “Magic Man,” “Barracuda,” “What About Love,” and “All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You,”  

Def Leppard and Heart is a concert you don’t want to miss.

Jason Aldean – Thursday, July 14 at The Wharf Amphitheatre, Time TBD

Last night, Jason Aldean played the stage on American Idol, performing with the popular show’s first winner, Kelly Clarkson. In July, he will be back at The Wharf in Orange Beach for his second straight year. Ever since “Hicktown,” his first album from 2005, Aldean has become a household name in country music. Born and raised in Macon, GA, Aldean has been playing music since high school, and has enjoyed a string of hits including “Amarillo Sky,” “She’s Country,” and “Crazy Town.”

YES / STYX – Friday, July 15 at The Wharf Amphitheatre, 8 p.m.

Winding up the summer concerts will be more classic 80s rock and roll with YES and Styx.

Originating in London, YES has been traveling, recording and entertaining for 43 years. Their progressive rock style attracts fans from many walks of life.

Styx, a Chicago based band, has been jamming since the 70s, and who hasn’t cranked up the stereo to tunes like “Come Sail Away,” “Too Much Time On My Hands,” “Show Me The Way,” and the ever popular “Rockin’ The Paradise.”
