ORANGE BEACH, AL - A police officer on patrol investigating the smell of smoke found a fire on a balcony at Romar Village on beach road in Orange Beach.

"Once again team work pays off and the Orange Beach Police Department is to be credited for saving lives on a fire scene," Orange Beach Fire and Rescue reported on its Facebook page about 4 a.m. on Oct. 3 "This call originated by a vigilant OB Police Officer. He actually smelled the smoke while on patrol, investigated further to observe fire on the balcony. He and other officers evacuated the building prior to our arrival."

Unlike the Island Dunes fire of Sept. 15 which destroyed 22 units, this balcony fire was quickly stopped.

The first report came in about 3 a.m. and crews found a fire on a second story balcony. Crews extinguished the fire before it got into the building.

One resident was injured during a fall on the stairs during evacuation but did not require a trip to the hospital. Six units responded to the fire.
