ORANGE BEACH, AL – The Orange Beach Fire and Rescue dive team recovered a missing resident from the waters at the eastern end of Ono Island on July 1.

Orange Beach Fire and Rescue was called out to help Escambia County, Fla., to a help locate a who was believed to be in the water.

“It turned into a confirmed missing person from a residence on Ono Island,” Orange Beach Battalion Chief Dray Resmondo said. “It turned into a search and rescue operation last night. He was located by our fire boat, Marine 5's down-and-side scan sonar.  We activated our dive team and they did the search and made the recovery.”

A post to Orange Beach Fire Department's Facebook page from a family member said the man recovered was Andy Blankenship, 39, of Athens, Ga. July 1 was his 39th birthday.

Initial calls came in about 6:30 p.m., Resmondo said, and the adult male’s body was located about 11:30 p.m.

Resmondo says crews stayed busy during the first night of the holiday weekend.

“We had a wreck at the Flora-Bama and a fire alarm at the school about the same time,” he said. There was no fire at Orange Beach Elementary School.

In Gulf Shores, Battalion Chief Bo Smith said crews there were busy overnight as well with several car accidents, medical calls and responded to a report of structure fire at Dairy Queen and once on the scene found out there was no fire.
