First grade classes are studying American symbols and landmarks in social studies. Students will work in cooperative groups and do reports on different symbols and landmarks of America. In math, first graders are continuing the hundreds chart and skip counting.
In language, first graders are learning about all kinds of adjectives. Mrs. Brunick’s class is using four square writing to learn how to write paragraphs. This week, Mrs. Brunick’s class will write about things they do not like.
Mrs. Brantley’s K-3 students at Sea, Sand, and Stars have been studying marine science. Kindergarteners are observing fish and hermit crabs. They have compared size, shape, and structure of these marine animals. First graders are observing our Gulf of Mexico fish in our 5,800-gallon tank and have identified fish characteristics. They discovered what “makes a fish a fish”. Second graders are studying the Gulf of Mexico and discussed the ocean zones. They have observed marine animals and identified their unique characteristics. They classified crustaceans, echinoderms, and fish. The marine food chain is the topic for third grade. Students acted out the energy pyramid and are using a microscope to identify phytoplankton and zooplankton.
Under the instruction of Mrs. Allen, fourth grade students are studying thunderstorms, lightning, and tornadoes. Fifth graders are studying the biology, adaptations, and ecological value of sharks. And finally, sixth graders are focusing on water chemistry with an emphasis on pH, ammonia, and nitrite and the effect of these on aquatic life.
Field trips continue as schools from Foley Elementary, Bay Minette Elementary, and Gulf Shores Elementary enhance their curriculums with studies in marine science and astronomy.
