Orange Beach Library offers March movie matinees

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — The Orange Beach Public Library is more than just the community library. Through its variety of classes, groups and offerings, the library staff is striving to provide a line-up of events to enrich the community library experience and the learning that typically goes along with idea of the library. March is no exception.

The library is also providing what some may seem as the opposite of reading, but a weekly matinee can still be a cultural and learning experience. Beginning the second week of March, the library will be offering a matinee movie each Wednesday at 3 p.m. You can bring popcorn and a snack to watch “Girl with a Pearl Earring” — a 2003 film based on a book of the same name, “State of Play” from 2009, “Butterfield 8” — a 1960 Elizabeth Taylor flick and “Remains of the Day” from 1999. The movies play in this order starting on March 9.

For those who need a little instruction in technology, the library is also teaching computer classes on the two middle Mondays with a focus on digital cameras and e-books.

On March 14, at 9:30 and 11 a.m. participants can learn about downloading e-books, and on March 21 at the same times, information will be provided on downloading pictures to the computer, then organizing and e-mailing them.

Students are encouraged to bring laptops and photography equipment for these classes and registration is required. You can register at the front desk of the library or call 251-981-2923.

On March 10, the library is showing its fun side by providing an opportunity for you to come learn Sudoku tips and tricks from Jim Jennings at 6 p.m.

The library also hosts the “Books Are Great (BAG) book group” on the second Tuesday of the month at 3 p.m. The goal of this group is to “strive to read thought-provoking books that will stimulate interesting, meaningful and lively discussion,” according to the website. Anyone is welcome to attend, no registration is required and light refreshments are served.

But, the library doesn’t leave children out of the extra programs. They also have a story time for preschoolers every week. “Pre-School Story Time” is every Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. This program is designed for pre-schoolers, but all ages are welcome. All children must be accompanied by a parent/caregiver.

Each week’s program begins with songs or games in which all can participate. This is followed by a story that’s either read or told. The event ends with a craft project.
