GULF SHORES, Ala. — Speed and alcohol are believed to be the factor in a Saturday morning accident that killed a Louisiana woman and left an Orange Beach man facing DUI and murder charges.
According to Cpl. Joe Piggott, State Trooper spokesman, Gary Arthur Arnold, 56, of Farmersville, La., was driving east on I-10 in a 1996 Ford Explorer when it was struck from behind by a 2002 Toyota 4-Runner driven by Jonathan W. Cook, 36, of Orange Beach.
Arnold’s vehicle left the roadway and overturned several times, ejecting 47-year-old Yvonne Carlo Arnold.
Officials said Yvonne Arnold was the sister of the driver.
According to a news release, she was in the back seat and was not wearing her seat belt.
Gary Arnold and another passenger, Cedric Sampson, were both wearing seat belts and were transported to USAMC for treatment of injuries sustained in the 1:30 a.m. crash.
Sampson was reported as being the fiancé of Yvonne Arnold.
Cook, who is believed to have been restrained, was not injured and booked into the Baldwin County Jail Jan. 17 and charged with murder and DUI.
Although the investigation into the crash continues, troopers believe that alcohol and speed contributed to the crash that occurred at the 40.5 mile marker, which is located between the Malbis and Loxley exits.
