At 5 p.m. today the Orange Beach City Council will consider adopting rules and regulations for the operation of The Orange Beach Event Center at the Wharf, including a rate schedule.
The rate will be $1,000 a day, but the city is considering offering discounts based on the number of hotel/condo nights that will be used by those attending events. The discount will range from 25 to 50 percent depending on how many room nights are booked.
"This is so important because no one knows us, and for someone in event planning to take a chance on something, there’s got to be some lagniappe, there’s got to be a carrot," Mayor Tony Kennon said. "Once they take a chance on us and they see how good a job that we do and the service they get from the city of Orange Beach, they’ll come back."
Angela Bateman of the city's Parks and Recreation Department has been working on the proposals and booking events for the Event Center. The city acquired the 27,000-foot center in March for $1.6 million.
Also under consideration by the council today are an approval for a restaurant retail liquor license for Tipseas Steam Shack, the declaration of micellaneous equipment in the Public Works department anda resolution to award a bid for a new commercial mower for Public Works.
