James Oubre, 78, distinguished and highly respected architect, born Jan. 29, 1921 in New Orleans and a resident of Gulf Shores for the past five years, died peacefully Friday, Aug. 31, 2007.

He was the son of Euclid Joseph Oubre and Anita Martin.

He was a member of St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church of New Orleans and was the founder of Oubre Associates, Architects, a noted New Orleans architectural firm which he successfully ran for over 40 years.

He was a graduate of Tulane University with a master’s degree in architecture and also held a master’s degree in architecture from the Columbia University in New York. He was given the distinguished William Kim Fellows Award, a traveling fellowship to Europe, upon graduation from Columbia.

He made numerous civic and charitable contributions to children’s organizations including Baptist Children’s Home, Taramarah Indian Children’s Fund of Mexico.

He was a member of the Christian Health Ministries for over 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his four children, Ella Marie Oubre, a native of New Orleans, who died in May of 1994; and two children, Paul Oubre and Ellen Oubre.

Survivors include two children, Denise Oubre Brister and Phillip Oubre; his wife of 10 years, Linda Murphy Oubre; step-daughter, Chantel Choina; sister, Greta (Loles) Landry; grandchildren, Joseph Lunday, Jenna Lunday, Gabriella Oubre, Justin Oubre, Jacob Reinhardt and Taylor Choina; and great-grandchild, James Albert Lunday.

Exemplifying every characteristic of a true Southern gentleman, he will be deeply missed by his wife, surviving children, grandchildren and friends.

Visitation for family will begin at 12:30 p.m. with visitation for friends beginning at 1 p.m. and funeral services beginning at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Pine Rest Funeral Home, Foley. Burial will follow at Pine Rest Memorial Park.
