Orange Beach Fire Rescue responded to a fully involved fire at a single family residential home on Safe Harbor Drive April 28. Battalion Chief Kevin Lanford said the city's crew was able to respond quickly to the event. "The call came in about eight minutes after 9 o'clock," Lanford said. "They reported a structure fire at this location. The first units arrived on scene within five minutes and found a fully involved building." Lanford said when crews arrived the fire was already spreading quickly throughout the building. "The structure is a two-story structure, and fire was shown on the deck and moving into the main living floor, which would be the second floor," Lanford said. "We had a full response. We had approximately 28 firefighters on the scene, and had the fire under control in about 28 to 35 minutes. We were able to turn the units loose a little after midnight." Lanford said several factors contributed to the blaze being a challenging one to fight. "We had a lot of wind coming off of the water," Lanford said. "Wind fuels the fire. It can increase the heat, and the smoke shifted several times." Lanford said the materials the home was built from were also a contributing factor. "It required so much water and there was just a lot of fuel burning," Lanford said. "I don't mean gasoline or anything like that, but there's just so much other material that burns. You've got plastics and other byproducts that changes the amount of heat that is put off. It just takes so much water." Lanford said crews from Escambia County, Florida and the Gulf Shores Fire and Rescue department also came to their aide, for which he was thankful. Lanford was also thankful the damage was contained to the structure where the fire started. "Our crews did an outstanding job fighting the fire with what we had," Lanford said. "I'm proud there was no damage to the surrounding structures and we had no injuries to either our firefighters or civilians reported." Lanford said there were no reports of residents being in the structure when the fire started and that an investigation into the cause was pending. "There are some things that the fire marshal is looking at, and I don't have that information," Lanford said. "I know the Orange Beach Fire Marshal has reached out to the state Fire Marshal's office for assistance with this investigation. They're talking to neighbors, witnesses, people that were in the area and they're just trying to figure it out."
