Submitted by Reid Blossom, Alabama Cattlemen's Association

Joseph Palmer of Bay Minette was presented with an AU Vet School Scholarship at the recent 69th Annual Alabama Cattlemen's Association Convention and Trade Show in Huntsville, AL.

Joseph Palmer is the son of Hugh Palmer from Bay Minette, AL. Prior to attending Vet School, Joseph received a Master’s of Science under Dr. Darrell Rankins at Auburn University. His research concentrated on the use of peanut by products in stocker cattle diets. Currently, he is enrolled in Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine and is a member of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners as well as the Society for Theriogenology. Joseph looks to practice vet medicine in a mixed animal practice as well as raise beef cattle.

Each year, the Alabama Cattlemen’s Foundation awards scholarships to deserving youth from Alabama’s livestock industry. These scholarships are funded through the sale of the “Cowboy Tag” which is available at your county’s tag office and is approved for vehicles up to 10,000 pounds.

The beef industry is the second largest segment of Alabama’s farm economy representing a $2 billion industry with annual sales of cattle and calves exceeding $450 million.  The Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, founded in 1944, is one of the nations largest state cattlemen’s association with an annual membership of 12,000.  For more information, visit the ACA website at www.bamabeef.org.■
