Patriot’s Day ceremony appreciated

My son, William Samuel Tynes, was honored on Sept. 11, Patriot’s Day, in a very special ceremony at the Fairhope K-1 Center. On behalf of Will’s family, I would like to extend my deepest thanks and sincere gratitude to everyone from the K-1 family, where I am a teacher, and the community for being a part of this tribute.

K-1 Center Principal Pat Carlton brought forth the idea of a plaque to be placed at the base of the flagpole in honor and memory of Will. The faculty and staff generously donated to cover the expense of the plaque. Their love and support is ongoing.

Morgan Slay of East Bay Engraving and Gallery, was instrumental in setting the inspirational wording on the plaque. Coach Ryan Hymel worked tirelessly and without complaint in blistering heat to refurbish the base of the flagpole. Bob Madaris and Rebecca Sterndorf helped with the site preparation. Charlene Dindo coordinated the ceremony as well as securing an American flag flown over the US. Capitol Building from Congressman Jo Bonner and an Alabama state flag from State Rep. Joe Faust.

U.S. Navy service members Ensign Darcy Dunlap and Petty Officer 2nd Class Bobby Jernigan brought a quiet dignity to the ceremony when raising and saluting the flags. The sweet student voices in unison with the strong adult voices were resolute when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

My son was unflinching in his patriotism. In a word, he would have said the tribute was “perfect.” Will would have been the first to acknowledge the patriotism and sacrifice of every service member and veteran attending the ceremony as well as family members and friends of the K-1 Center who valiantly served in the military or who are currently serving and defending our great country. They truly are the unsung heroes.

I am very appreciative to have shared this moment with all of you knowing my son was with us in spirit.
