SUMMERDALE, Ala. — Several Summerdale streets could be paved, before long.

During a special meeting Thursday, the Summerdale Council voted to apply for $123,585 in funding from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. That sum would enable the paving of sections of Hamm, Third and West Jefferson streets.

“On this one, we had to go door-to-door and have people fill out surveys,” Town Clerk Tiffany Lynn told the Council.

Diane Burnett of South Alabama Regional Planning Commission explained that this funding would deem the paving a public-facilities project.

“Based on the number of people that live on these streets,” she said.

According to the resolution, the town will be commit a matching amount of $13,728.65 to the project.

Burnett said that although ADECA did not require the town to provide matching funds, she felt doing so would help.

With Mayor Pro-Tem Myles Bishop presiding over the meeting in the absence of Mayor David Wilson, the Council unanimously agreed to proceed with the funding application, which has a deadline of this Thursday.

Council member Mary Carolyn McDaniel was also absent from the special-called meeting.

In that meeting, the Council also voted to apply for another Community Development Block Grant from ADECA. This one consisted of $30,000, which would be used to update Summerdale’s comprehensive plan.

With that funding, the town would not be required to provide a match.
