DAPHNE, Alabama – Penalties in the game’s final two minutes and a blocked field goal helped the Leeds Green Wave to a 22-21 win over Bayside Academy in the second round of the state playoffs.
Down by one point with 1:57 left in the game from their own 41-yard line, Bayside’s Hunter Slater connected with Jacob Graddick twice for completions of seven and 14 yards. Slater also completed a 16-yard throw to Jonathon Walton on fourth-and-15 to keep the late-game drive alive.
The drive was called back twice because Bayside had too many men on the field. The final penalty came with two seconds left as Trey Smith was lining up for a field goal at the 24-yard line. His attempt from the 29 was blocked by Leeds, ending the game.
“We just made some mistakes execution-wise and it came back to hurt us,” Bayside Coach Phil Lazenby said. “We didn’t execute well.”
Leeds scored first on an interception return by Dakota Creel. The extra point was missed and the Green Wave took the lead with 6:08 left in the first quarter.
Walton blocked a punt for Bayside with 3:07 left in the half, but another Slater interception gave Leeds the ball before halftime.
Bayside recovered an onside kick to start the second half and scored on the ensuing six-play drive with an eight-yard run by Tripp Puckett. Smith’s kick was good and the Admirals took a 7-6 lead with 9:37 left in the third quarter.
Leeds took the lead back with a 22-yard field goal after a 13-play drive that ate up 7:29 and featured a run of 16 yards by Ellis Nation.
Walton returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to give the Admirals the lead again. The missed extra point made it 13-9 with 1:53 left in the third.
The lead changed again on the next drive for the Green Wave when Nation scored from three yards out. The drive also featured a 49-yard halfback pass from Nation to Nick Bolton. The missed extra point put Leeds on top 15-13 with 9:11 left in the game.
Bayside answered with an 11-play, 4:40-drive that ended with a three-yard Walton touchdown run. The Admirals converted a two-point play with a pass from Slater to Zachary Dyas to take a 21-15 lead with 4:25 left in the game.
Leeds scored on its next drive with a three-yard run by Nation. The extra point gave them the one-point lead.
“The kids played hard,” Lazenby said. “I’m just proud of them.”
