SUMMERDALE, Ala. - The Summerdale Town Council discussed at Tuesday's work session charging people to enter the town Splash Park.
Summerdale Mayor David Wilson people are smoking in the park and leaving trash, including dirty diapers and underwear and cans.
"Something needs to be done," Wilson said.
Some of the suggestions and proposals included making non-Summerdale residents pay $2 per person to enter the park and charging $5 for a family. Summerdale residents would be able to enter for free.
"We're not getting anything now. We're losing money," Wilson said, noting he believes around 90 percent of the people who come to the park are not from Summerdale.
"It may even be more than 90 percent."
Councilman Travis Townsend liked the idea of allowing Summerdale residents to enjoy the park free of charge.
"I like the idea that if they are a resident of Summerdale they can register, have a card and not have to pay," Townsend said.
Along with the idea to charge people to enter, the council discussed hiring an attendant to oversee the park during operation hours. The attendant would be a part-time, seasonal position and Wilson suggested hiring four attendants to fill the shifts.
The park is being put to use by people, Wilson said, noting he thinks around 28 people were inside the park when he passed it Tuesday afternoon.
