Perdido Bay FC girls reach Disney finals

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Perdido Bay FC U10 Girls capped off an impressive season at the ESPN Wide World of Sport Complex in Orlando, Fla. as finalist in the Disney Memorial Day Soccer Shootout's most competitive cup division.

The girls faced the highest level of competition playing five games in three days. The first three games determined which teams would advance out of two brackets to the semi-final matches. The Perdido girls advanced out of their bracket as the number one seed playing the Brandon FC

Flames from Tampa, Brentwood Soccer Club from Tennessee and Boynton Beach Knights from Miami.

The first match against Brandon FC Flames was a tight match that resulted in a 1-0 victory with the Perdido's Jessica Boldenow finishing on the receiving end of a corner in the final three minutes of regulation.

The second match was a battle of two great soccer teams. The Beat girls jumped out front in the first 15 minutes of the game 2-0 and appeared to be coasting to a win with goals from Avery Howell on an impressive 20-yard shot and Haylie Scott. Haylie's goal was set up nicely on a long ball from opposite field by Alexandra Shimasaki that Haylie one touched into the goal. The Brentwood Club battled back to take a 3-2 lead. Once again, Jessica Boldenow was able to step up in the final minutes and provide a game tying goal.

The third match was against the Boynton Beach Knights. In this match, the Beat girls found themselves down 1-0 in the first five minutes of the game. The girls dug deep and fought back to win with goals from Brianna Pope and Halyie Scott. “Maddie” Vasquez, Avery Howell and Erin O'Donnell led the team defensively to keep the Knights from threatening another goal after the early score.

In the semi-finals the girls faced the number two seed from the other bracket — the Cherokee Impact Gold from Georgia. The Perdido Beat won handedly 4-1 with goals from Jessica Boldenow, Brianna Pope (2) and Haylie Scott.

In the finals the girls faced a rematch from the pervious day's game against the Boynton Beach Knights. The competition was once again fierce as both teams saw opportunities on one another's goal. The game ended in a tie and was forced to a shootout to decide the winner.

“Every girl on this team has worked hard to get us to this level of competitiveness,” Perdido Bay coach Jason Scott said. “It is hard to think that we just became a team last September and experienced success at this level. Most teams we played have been together for two-plus years. I attribute the team’s success to the talented athletes and supportive parents on the team combined with the Perdido Bay FC’s focus on developing players led by the Director of Coaching Kenny Morgan and Director of Training Fraga DaRosa. The fact that Coach Fraga trains with the all of Perdido Bay FC’s teams once a week and Kenny trains with every team twice a month makes a difference in developing the players within our club.”

Since becoming a team in September, the Beat girls have played in 12 tournaments winning seven and placing second five times. The girls have played tournaments Florida, Louisiana, Georgia and Alabama.

The team’s trademark is tough defense lead by goalkeeper Abby Yates. This season, Abby has only been scored on in goal twice during regulation play in 19 games.

Assistant Coach Brian Shimasaki has trained Abby in the goal keeper position this season.

“I am impressed with her athletic ability and how she has responded as our keeper,” Shimasaki said. “She is a big reason why we were successful this season.”

The Perdido Beat is moving to the U11 age group in the fall and is looking for talented players. If interested, please visit the club's website for more information: http://www.perdidobayfc.com/
