GULF SHORES, Ala. — Everybody loves a brass band. Show that love Thursday, May 14, when the city of Gulf Shores Special Events Division presents another free Gulf Shores Outdoors & In concert on the lawn behind the Erie H. Meyer Civic Center, located at the intersection of West Second Street and West 19th Avenue in Gulf Shores.

Perdido Brass will blow into town for a 7 p.m. performance with two trumpets and two trombones combining to make beautiful music from Bach to patriotic tunes, jazz and more.

Bring a lawn chair or mat, a picnic dinner and family and friends, and get ready for a couple of hours of musical enjoyment. If the weather refuses to cooperate, the concert will move inside.

Formed in 1988, Perdido Brass has performed throughout northwest Florida and south Alabama. The group is based in the Pensacola area, and has been featured as part of the Evenings in Navarre series, the Perdido Pops Concert Series at Big Lagoon State Recreation Area in Pensacola, the St. James Concert Series in Fairhope and at Pensacola Junior College.

Perdido Brass has been featured with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, including pops concerts and in televised broadcasts by WSRE-TV.

The group has also been featured on WUWF’s “RadioLive” program, including simulcasts with WEAR-TV in Pensacola.

Dale Riegle leads the Perdido Brass. He is principal trumpeter with the Pensacola and Mobile Symphony orchestras, and former principal trumpeter with the Gulf Coast Symphony in Mississippi.

He has been a soloist on the Music at Christ Church series in Pensacola, with the Pensacola Symphony, including a recent appearance with former Canadian Brass trumpeter Jens Lindemann; also soloist with the Mobile Symphony, the Okaloosa Symphony and the Pensacola Civic Band.

Riegle is the technical director and a producer at the University of West Florida’s public radio station WUWF, 88.1 FM.

Trumpeter Sharon Kostelecky is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, with degrees in music education and trumpet performance. In five years as a band director in the Magnolia State, she led her ensembles to numerous superior ratings in competition.

She has performed with the Mississippi and Meridian Symphony orchestras and at the Sewanee Music Center.

Kostelecky has taught at Faulkner State Community College, and is an adjunct instructor at Pensacola Junior College, as well as on faculty for the Escambia County school system.

She is a member of the Pensacola Symphony and Choral Society orchestras.

Trombonist Bret Barrow is principal trombonist with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, and is an administrator for the Pensacola Symphony, including serving as director of education.

He earned his master’s degree in music from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. While studying there, he performed with the West Virginia Symphony, the Evansville Philharmonic, the Springfield Symphony, and was an antiphonal trombonist for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.

Barrow performs regularly with the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, and has also performed with the Mobile Symphony, the Mississippi Symphony and the Meridian Symphony.

Formerly band director at Foley High School, trombonist Don Snowden’s musical versatility has served the northwest Florida area well for many years.

He is currently music and theater department head, director of bands and assistant professor at Pensacola Junior College.

He is the director of the Pensacola Civic Band, an award-winning ensemble that performs for thousands of people every year in subscription concerts and free outdoor concerts.

Snowden is an active performer, holding the second trombone position in the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra since 1979 and is the leader of the Pensacola Big Band All Stars with Holly Shelton.

He is also a musical theater conductor, conducting many productions such as “West Side Story,” “Hello, Dolly!,” “The Secret Garden,” “Gypsy,” “Into the Woods,” “Sweet Charity” and “Les Miserables.”

The sounds of Perdido Brass will entertain music lovers of all ages.
