Students at Perdido Elementary/Middle School decided to spread a little Christmas cheer with a community service project that involved the William Green Veterans Home.
The first grade students of Mrs. Laurie Myer, Mrs. Many Scarborough and Mrs. KelliWallace, worked with music teacher, Mrs. Dell Edwards, for a month, to learn a variety of traditional Christmas carols and several contemporary ones.
Students in grades pre-K through 5 made Christmas cards, wishing the veterans a Merry Christmas and thanking them for their service to our country. Grade levels were challenged to see which one could collect the most “goodies” to be delivered to the residents. Students collected socks, chap-stick, Kleenex, lotion and candies, which they packed into Christmas bags along with ornaments that were made by Ms. Gerri McDonald’s humanities students. Notepads and pencils were added to complete the gift bags.
Over 40 first grade students, along with their teachers and several humanities students, visited for over an hour entertaining the residents with their songs and gifts. Teacher Mrs. Laurie Myer shared that the first graders enjoyed the visit as much as the residents.
This is the third year that Perdido Elementary/Middle School has had a group participate in this community service project. Funding for the trip was obtained through a scholarship/grant awarded to Ms. McDonald by the family of former Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, in memory of their daughter who was a teacher.
