FOLEY, Ala. - Foley Elementary School will have Family Reading Nights on Oct. 11 for Kindergarten and Oct. 18 for first grade. Both will begin at 6 p.m.in the cafeteria.  Letters will be going out soon.

Students with Perfect Attendance for September will be given an “Out of Uniform Pass” to be used once any time during the month of October.  The class from each grade level with the best attendance during September will be awarded a Pizza Party!

G-day, mate! It’s on to Australia for Carol DeMaio’s Kindergarten class. The thematic study will include many of the indigenous animals, songs, and traditions of the Land Down Under. To wrap up the study they will take a trip to the Exploreum to see the exhibit of the “ridgy-didge” Australia. There will be no one “grizzle” about this field trip and study!

Miss Davis’ first grade class studied about habitats of different animals after reading the story “Animal Park.” They researched an animal they chose, wrote out a plan, and then created a diorama of the habitat for their animal.

Some of the animals that were chosen were snakes, polar bears, tigers, and many more. The class enjoyed the project and loved making their dioramas.

Ms. Hayes’ third grade class is studying about living things. They just completed a plant unit and had a great “hands on” learning experience with Wisconsin Fast Plants. Currently, they are studying animals and will learn all about penguins in reading class while improving comprehension skills. The students are reading Henry Huggins by Beverly Cleary aloud in class. Everyone loves hearing about Henry and his adventures with his dog Ribsy! Third grade is a great place to be!

Mrs. Gay’s fourth grade class is learning about electricity in science using AMSTI. They have discovered how electricity gets from the power plant to their house. The students used their inquiring minds to create simple, series, and parallel circuits.  Mrs. Gay integrated technology by using Smartboard notebooks on electricity. The class had a guest speaker from Riviera Utilities to teach about staying safe with electricity.

He demonstrated several ways you can get hurt with the Safety Town Simulator. The students have learned many concepts about electricity and had fun while learning.

In Mrs. Gay’s class, she uses hands-on approach for teaching in every subject. In math students are using base 10 blocks in subtraction so they understand the purpose of regrouping.

In Alabama history, students met Ms. Gerry and Mrs. Barbara. These two ladies are archaeologist from South Alabama. They spoke to the class about the job of an archaeologist and conducted an activity on analyzing artifacts.

The students worked in cooperative learning groups and discovered where the artifacts came from, how many people where in the family, and wrote a hypothesis on what type of family it was based on the artifacts (wealthy, poor, farmers, blacksmith, teacher, games…). Mrs. Gay’s class has been very busy learning new things in fourth grade.
