Phyllis Jean Herfendal, 88, of Minot, N.D. and formerly of Foley, died Sunday, March 23, 2014 in a Minot nursing home.
Phyllis was born Oct. 18, 1925 in Youngstown, Ohio, the only daughter of Chester and Christine Williams. As a child, she moved to numerous communities and schools following her father’s job with the railroad.
Phyllis continued her education at Indiana University, where she earned a teaching degree.
She was united in marriage to Julian H. “Duffy” Herfendal in Wheaton, Ill. They made their home in Le Sueur, Minn. for many years.
At age 40, Phyllis completed her education with a master’s degree in social work through Mankato State University. She utilized her social work skills as a department head for St. Peter’s State Hospital in St. Peter, Minn. for many years.
They retired to Orange Beach in 1986 and later moved to Foley prior to Duffy’s death on Dec. 31, 1999.
Phyllis enjoyed reading and has always been true to her family and strong in her Presbyterian faith as a member of Gulf Shores Presbyterian Church.
She will be missed by all who shared in her life.
Her loving family includes her son, David Herfendal of Minot, N.D.; grandchildren, Eric (fianceé Cristy Gaarder) Herfendal of Lincoln, N.D. and Phillip (Megan) Herfendal of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and great-grandchildren, Gavin and Aiden Herfendal and Brynn Noelle Herfendal.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Duffy.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 31, 2014 at the chapel of Pine Rest Funeral Home, with entombment to follow in Magnolia Mausoleum at Pine Rest Memorial Park.
