Picked on by bullies during PE

Dear Peer Pressure:

Kids are picking on me during PE. I tried telling them to stop. I tried everything and they won’t stop.  These guys are aggravating me. One guy throws sea shell rocks and acorns. I just read — so they won’t bother me — but I would rather do PE. They get into trouble by the teachers, they’re in trouble for like the fifth time, and they wait a few days and start up again. How can I do PE under these circumstances?

SR: I think it is admirable that you choose to read in your free time. Also, I am proud of you for not retaliating. Unfortunately, there are young people and even adults who have a hard time leaving innocent people alone. I believe trouble makers are jealous of those who are strong enough to make smart decisions. I know you do not like having to report the problem to teachers, but it is vital that you defend yourself in a safe manner.

Certain children have a learned habit of attacking others or throwing temper tantrums. Explosive young people are always a handful for teachers. If possible, focus on why the “mean” students are behaving the way they do; rather than what they are doing. You might be able to encourage other students who are friends with the bullies to encourage them to stop picking on you. You also could attempt to find another friend to sit with you while you read. Another option would be to ask the school counselor if she or he could observe the students when they normally “act out” or if there is a school “peer mediation” program in place.

JPC: This is a really hard situation to be in. You should be able to do PE without worrying about being picked on or having things thrown at you. I’m also sorry these bullies are so persistent, but it’s good you’ve found a space where they won’t bother you.  However, you shouldn’t have to be afraid to do PE, especially if that is what you would prefer to be doing.

I’m sorry going to your teachers was unsuccessful in dealing with this issue. It might be a good idea to see a higher power about this problem. If you alert a school counselor or principal to this issue they should be able to help you find a way to take back your PE class. Letting the principal and others know what’s going on should help your situation.

You can always read after school — and after PE!
