Most of tonight’s high school football games involving Baldwin County teams could end up being blowouts, with 6A No. 1 Daphne visiting winless Satsuma, Foley (3-2) hosting 0-5 Baldwin County, Fairhope’s powerful 4-1 squad hosting 1-4 Robertsdale and struggling Faith Academy (1-4) playing at rejuvenated Spanish Fort (3-2).
Tonight’s most interesting games might be in Daphne and Gulf Shores. In Daphne tonight, 3A No. 6 Bayside Academy puts its unbeaten record on the line against No. 4 Washington County. In south Baldwin County, Gulf Shores (2-3) hosts a Citronelle team with an identical record. Both could be very entertaining games.
Washington County at Bayside Academy: Class 3A No. 6 Bayside Academy has posted a few exciting wins on the way to a 5-0 record this season. The Admirals have a come-from-behind win against Millry and a road win at perennial powerhouse T.R. Miller among their five wins this season. Bayside’s offense has been spectacular this season, averaging 36.6 points per game. Its defense started the season by giving up 32 to Millry and 27 to T.R. Miller, but held its next three opponents to 10, 7, and 13 points. Washington County has a good offense as well (31.6 ppg), but its defense has held opponents to 7.2 points per game. Playing at home gives Bayside the edge in this one. Prediction: Bayside Academy 31, Washington County 28.
Citronelle at Gulf Shores: Gulf Shores (2-3) welcomes Citronelle (2-3) tonight and has a chance to get its first win over a 5A opponent this season. The Dolphins opened with a win over 6A Robertsdale before dropping three straight to Spanish Fort, Vigor and LeFlore. Gulf Shores topped 4A Saraland last week 21-16. The Dolphins have struggled to find offense in 2011, scoring just 15.8 points per game, but Citronelle’s defense has given up more than 28 points three times in five games. The Wildcats gave up 47 points in back-to-back losses to Vigor and Faith Academy. They have also had offensive struggles of their own, scoring just 16 points per game. Prediction: Gulf Shores 24, Citronelle 17.
Daphne at Satsuma: Satsuma (0-5) has never beaten Daphne (5-0) in 11 tries, and it won’t happen tonight, either. Daphne, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, has steamrolled through its schedule this season, outscoring opponents 203-55 and scoring more than 41 points in four of its five wins. Satsuma hasn’t even sniffed a win in 2011, dropping five games by a combined 212-27 score. Prediction: Daphne 49, Satsuma 0.
Baldwin County at Foley: Foley got back in the win column last week with a 35-21 win over Alma Bryant. Kalif Koen had a monster game rushing the ball with 190 yards and two touchdowns to lead the 3-2 Lions. Baldwin County has dropped 17 straight games and lost 18 of its last 19 over the last three seasons. The Tigers are improved this season and they might keep this one close, but Foley will win. Prediction: Foley 31, Baldwin County 14.
Robertsdale at Fairhope: The Fairhope Pirates (4-1), coming off a homecoming win over St. Paul’s, host Robertsdale (1-4) in 6A Region 2 play tonight. The Pirates are outscoring opponents by an average score of 42-18 this season. Robertsdale’s offense has improved over the last five games, but its defense has struggled, which isn’t a good sign as the high-powered Pirates welcome them tonight. Prediction: Fairhope 35, Robertsdale 14.
Faith Academy at Spanish Fort: Spanish Fort (3-2) survived the suspension of 10 players with a 2-1 record in the last three games and hosts a struggling Faith Academy (1-4) tonight in 5A Area 1 play. The full strength Toros should have no problems with the Rams. Prediction: Spanish Fort 28, Faith Academy 7.
