GULF SHORES – The Fairhope Pirates followed a victory over sixth-ranked Baldwin County on Monday with a 51-48 win over Gulf Shores on Tuesday night.
The Pirates (5-5) started the game with a three pointer from Tyler Baggerly and never trailed the rest of the way.
"This was a tough game after such an emotional one against Baldwin County," Fairhope coach Andy Ryan said. "Gulf Shores has a really good team, Coach (Dru Powell) does a really good job with them. I thought our team showed a lot of maturity to come back tonight and win after last night's physically and mentally draining win. Our kids responded well against a good team."
Fairhope held Gulf Shores center Brandon Gottfried to just six points. He scored a season-high 36 points against Robertsdale the night before.
"Gottfried was a tough matchup for us," Ryan said. "Our post players were physical with him and we had some other guys helping on him. I think the biggest thing is that we didn't give him any easy baskets. We made him work for his points. He is hard to beat when he gets the ball, so we just kept it out of his hands."
Fairhope led 15-8 after the first period and 24-20 at the half. Gulf Shores pulled within one point in the third period after a Jake Van Sickler three pointer, but Fairhope responded with a three from Tripp Drummond and a two-point basket from Harvey Mitchell. The Pirates led 38-34 at the end of the third, and Gulf Shores never got closer than three points behind in the fourth.
Drummond led Fairhope with 17 points and Mitchell had 15. Maurice Jackson had 10 points in the win.
"I thought Tripp played well tonight," Ryan said. "His offense has always been there, but I am more proud of his defense tonight."
Bryan Beviacqua led Gulf Shores with 19 points, and Van Sickler had 14.
Gulf Shores will host the Coca Cola Christmas Tournament this weekend. Fairhope plays St. Paul's on Friday.
