FAIRHOPE — The Jubilee Cup changed zip codes Friday night. Something it has not done in a dozen years.
For the last 12 seasons the annual war-on-the-shore trophy awarded to the winner between the Pirates and Trojans has resided at Daphne High.
But the Pirates filled out the change-of-address card with a 35-7 home win at Majors Field to go 8-0 overall and 5-0 in 6A Region 2, Daphne dropped to 4-4 overall but are still in the playoff race with only two region losses.
Both teams suffered major injuries to starters in the first half. Jamal Woodyard of Fairhope and Russ Mosley of Daphne may be out two to five weeks with severe ankle injuries.
DHS coach Glenn Vickery said the big difference was the early and then consistent momentum of the Pirates.
"The big difference was they scored often and early and then our defense stood up, but then we just couldn't score anymore points. Coach (David) Stapleton (FHS Defensive Coordinator) did a great job with his defense. We knew they have a very good football team and congratulations to them."
Fairhope coach David Faulkner also said the quick charge lead and steady defensive play was key.
"We got off to a fast start. We took the opening drive and score right there and then we get a stop defensively and score again and go up 14 nothing and eventually 21 to nothing. We just got some momentum early and that carried over for the rest of the game."
Fairhope came out aggressively as Woodyard scored three minutes, 12 seconds into the game in the first quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Daryl Norris. Ian Dingwall's PAT made it 7-0. Harvey Mitchell scored on the Pirates' second drive less than three minutes later on a two-yard dive.
DHS went four-and -out three straight series and FHS took it down and scored again with 1:11 left in the first period when Nate Andrews recovered a Pirate fumble in the endzone. Mitchell scored again in the second on a one-yard plunge with 7:15 left in the half and Fairhope led 28-0. DHS got on the board with 3:06 to go in the half when T.J. Yeldon capped a 70-yard drive on a four-yard dive. Brandon Roberts kicked the PAT and the half ended 28-7.
The third quarter was scoreless although an apparent FHS TD was ruled a fumble and recovered by DHS as the clock ran out.
The Trojans moved the ball with Sam Gresham in for Mosley, but were unable to score. The Pirates added a TD run of 19 yards by Mitchell in the fourth with 1:37 left in the game.
Norris finished with 14 completions out of 23 attempts for 156 yards. Gresham threw for 180 yards going 18-of-32.
Woodyard was hurt on the third FHS drive but racked up 75 yards on seven carries and had 30 return yards and 19 receiving. Mitchell carried 15 times for 70 yards. Bobby Douglass caught seven passes from Norris for 59 yards.
Daphne's TJ Yeldon ran 14 times for 73 yards. Justin Jackson had four receptions for 43 yards for DHS.
