FAIRHOPE – Fairhope senior quarterback Daryl Norris completed 25-of-28 passes for 243 yards, three touchdowns and one interception and rushed for two scores as the fourth-ranked Pirates (11-0) defeated visiting Murphy 42-32 in a 6A first round playoff game on Friday.
The Pirates, who won 6A Region 2, will host Daphne in a second round game on Friday. Fairhope defeated Daphne in regular season play.
Norris completed 23 straight passes for 216 yards and three scores to start the game. He threw his first incompletion on the last play of the third quarter.
“Daryl is an incredible player,” Fairhope head coach David Faulkner said of his senior quarterback. “We told him we were going to have to put the game on his shoulders tonight and he did an incredible job.”
After Murphy scored on its opening drive, the Pirates built a 21-12 lead by halftime. The Pirates drove 65 yards on 15 plays for their first score, a one-yard rushing touchdown from Norris.
Patrick McLeod intercepted Murphy at the Panther 42 and the Pirates scored on a 12 yard run by Cliffton Johnson eight plays later.
Murphy botched a punt snap on its next possession and Willie Woodyard recovered at the Panther 18. Norris hit Bobby Douglass for an 18-yard score on the next play.
Caddell Peterson intercepted a pass on Murphy’s next possession, but Fairhope was forced to punt three plays later. Murphy scored on the next possession.
Norris connected with D.J. Ash for a 30-yard score on the Pirates’ opening possession of the second half. Fairhope led 28-12.
Murphy drove from its own 37 to the Fairhope 1, but fumbled near the goal line where Chase Garnham recovered.
Fairhope scored two possessions later on a 20-yard pass from Norris to Johnson and the Pirates led 35-18 with 35 seconds left in the third quarter.
Murphy answered 30 seconds later when University of Florida commitment Solomon Patton scampered 48 yards for a touchdown. Murphy forced a Fairhope punt and scored on a 42-yard pass to Patton to make the score 35-32 with just over nine minutes to play in the game.
Fairhope fumbled on its next possession and Norris threw an interception after that, but Murphy did not capitalize on either turnover.
Blakeley Terral recovered a Murphy fumble with just over six minuted left in the game at the Pirate 32 and Fairhope scored on a two-yard run by Norris on the ensuing drive.
Woodyard capped the game with an interception at the Pirate 29 with under three minutes left in the game.
“Our guys did an incredible job of answering every time Murphy made a big play,” Faulkner said. “We knew they had some playmakers who were going to make plays. I am proud of the way our guys answered every time.”
