FAIRHOPE — After a successful road trip to Alex City and a 38-17 win over Benjamin Russell, the now 6-0, No. 7-ranked Fairhope Pirates are ready for a string of games that will determine the 6A Region 2 championship.
Fairhope is clearly in the lead with a 3-0 record over region opponents McGill-Toolen, Foley and Baldwin County so far, but FHS head coach David Faulkner said it's not downhill from here.
"Of course, were excited about that. We're excited about where we are, but also we realize that there's a lot of football ahead of us," he said Monday. "As far as being 6-0, we still try to go out and prepare to win each game, no matter what. But we still have to get ready for some tough region games coming up. We have a very good Robertsdale team this weekend for homecoming. They are much improved and then we have a tough one with Daphne that very well could be for the region title and then finish out with a good Satsuma team and we just can't take anybody lightly. Robertsdale will pose a real challenge for us. They have a very good quarterback and a very good receiver. Their defense is playing real well and are playing better and definitely capable of beating whoever they play."
Faulkner said the game at BRHS went well and senior quarterback Daryl Norris had a 'Hi-Lite Reel' night under center throwing and running the ball.
"Daryl had an outstanding game up there. He completed 21 of 24 passes for around 290 yards and ran a couple of balls in so he had a great night. I'm proud of all the guys. I'm excited for the whole team. You know, it's a real team effort. It takes everybody. Usually the ones handling the ball get the most attention, but it takes everybody for the team to be successful and I'm really proud of how they have come together and done that so far."
The Wildcats scored first on 28-yard field goal by Jacob Smith, but Fairhope took the lead on a four-yard touchdown run by Jamal Woodyard who also scored from three yards out in the second quarter. The Pirates led 14-10 to start the second half with Norris scoring on runs of 17 and nine yards. Ian Dingwall hit a 28-yard field goal and Norris hit Nate Andrews for a 49-yard TD toss to cap the FHS scoring.
Harvey Mitchell caught a 33-yard pass from Norris and Patrick McCloud intercepted a Wildcat pass. Both plays set up Fairhope scores.
