Pirates shut out Davidson 10-0 in playoff opener

MOBILE, Alabama – The look new look Fairhope Pirate offense was on display at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in the first round of the 6A playoffs Friday night. Senior quarterback Nate Andrews and the Pirates scored just enough as the defense led the way to a 10-0 win over the Davidson Warriors.

Using a style much different than the one they featured at the beginning of the season, the Pirates used the option style offense to dominate the time of possession.

“We didn’t come into the game planning on doing that. That was just how the game dictated itself,” Fairhope head coach Adam Winegarden said. “We knew if we could get up by two scores the way both teams were eating the clock it would have been tough for them to come back.”

The defense seemed to steal the show on Friday night as they held dual threat senior quarterback Brendan Jackson to 7-15 for 84 yards he also threw an interception.

On the ground, Jackson ran for 50 yards on 17 carries.

Led by the athletic play of the linebackers the Pirate defense stopped the Warriors on three fourth down attempts; including one that led to a 14-play drive that concluded with a 29-yard field goal by junior kicker John Baxter.

“Playoff games come down to four or five plays. We dropped a couple of passes in the redzone in the first half,” Davidson head coach Fred Riley said. “We probably should have punted the one time we had it in the fourth quarter on the fifty and maybe we could have flipped the field and something good might have happened.”

“It’s been a long time since we were shut out so you have to give them a lot of credit,” Riley said.

The Pirates had a key interception in the third quarter by senior defensive back Dre Irvin as the Warriors had it inside Pirate territory.

“(Our) defense was outstanding. It’s a credit to all of our kids and coaches; they do a great job preparing our players,” Winegarden said. “We have really grown each week as a football team I couldn’t be happier for our guys and I just love our team.”

Both teams struggled to mount any offense early as both teams were held scoreless in the first quarter.

Davidson had a missed opportunity to put points on the board when they started a possession near midfield. The drive stalled when they failed on a fourth down attempt on their own 20-yard line.

The game remained scoreless until the Pirates first possession of the second quarter when Andrews ran in a touchdown from 16-yards out to give them a 7-0 lead.

The Warriors again would mount an impressive drive of 8 plays until they were again shut down on another fourth down attempt.

The Pirates took a 10-0 lead into the half after the late field goal by Baxter.

The second half was controlled by both defenses. Both teams forced turnovers including the interception by Irvin inside Warrior territory. Andrews also fumbled the ball on a drive that had lasted 11 plays.

Andrews led the way offensively Friday night for the Pirates he rushed for over 170 yards on 25 carries and he also scored a touchdown. He completed 6-11 of his passes for just over 100 yards.

David Kirksey also had good night for the Trojans he racked 95 total yardss including two big runs in the second half to extend drives.

With the win the Pirates advance to second round of the 6A State Playoffs. They play at home against Carver-Montgomery Friday night at 7 p.m.
