FAIRHOPE, Ala. – Fairhope scored 28 points in the second half on Friday to beat the Satsuma Gators 35-13 in Class 6A Region 2 play.
After gaining just 60 yards of offense and playing the Gators to a 7-7 tie at the half, the Pirates took control on their first drive of the second half. Fairhope drove 72 yards on 10 plays, capped by a seven-yard touchdown run from Tanner Martin.
"We didn't make any adjustments schematically," Fairhope coach David Faulkner said of his team's second half explosion. "We just tried to come out and play with a little better execution and a little better execution. I'm not taking anything away from Satsuma, they came out and did what they needed to do and played well. We just didn't play with that energy and that enthusiasm that we talk about playing with at Fairhope."
Martin would score two more times for the Pirates, once from eight yards out and once from five. Junior quarterback Chase Domino had an eight-yard touchdown run, and Nathan Andrews added a two-yard score in the fourth quarter.
Faulkner credited his team's defense, which forced five turnovers, with keeping his team in the game. Timothy Coleman had two interceptions and a fumble recovery, and Willie Woodyard had two picks. Fairhope's defense gave up a touchdown on Satsuma's opening drive in the first half, then gave up a one-yard touchdown run after the Gators took a screen play 64 yards to inside the Pirate five.
"They kept us in the game," Faulkner said. "Basically defensively we kept them out of the end zone other than the first drive and the missed tackle on the screen. Other than that we created turnovers and gave ourselves good field position. They kept us in a position to win the game until offensively we could find some yards."
Fairhope improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in Region 2 play and hosts 0-3 Baldwin County on Friday.
"Any region win you can get you gotta get," Faulkner said. "You can't take it for granted. You have to come out ready to play each week."
