FAIRHOPE – It was serious alligator weather but the Pirates squeezed a 6-3 win from Satsuma in game one then ignited the waterproof cannons for a 14-3, 10-inning finish in the nightcap.
The No. 2-ranked Fairhope Pirates swept the No. 5 SHS Gators 2-0 Saturday after lightening storms delayed the best-of-three, second-round Class 6A playoff series doubleheader Friday at Volanta Park after less than a complete inning.
The Pirates (33-7) will travel to No. 9 Northview High Friday in Dothan for the third round series. Satsuma ended 2010 as 6A Area 4 champs at (24-10).
"I knew we were swinging it better during the week," said Pirates coach Stu Fuller said. "Late in the year, we went into a little swoon, but I thought we were coming out of it with the BP and the station work we did this week. It was good to swing it. We just need to keep it up, have another good week of preparation and go to Dothan and see what happens."
Ashton Johnson (5-2) got the complete game win in game two and got the offense started with a solo homer in the top of the second as FHS wore their road jerseys as visitors. He underwrote the win when he added a two-RBI double in the fifth. Johnson pitched a five hitter with just one-earned run. Peyton Fuller added a two-run homer and a solo shot, and Brock Gilheart's bases-loaded triple in the top of the sixth made it 13-3 then 14-3 when he scored off the bobbled relay to cap a six-run burst. The Pirates belted 14 hits on three SHS pitchers scoring four in the third and three in the fifth as well.
In the opener, Daryl Norris improved to 10-1 on the year going the distance with 11 strikeouts and scattering six hits and allowed two earned runs. At the plate he was 4-for-4 and reached base 10 times in the series. Chase Domino hit two-run and three-run home runs to fire the FHS offense which out hit SHS six to four.
Ashton and Daryl both had quality starts," Fuller said. "And we needed that. I'm proud of all guys and we're looking forward to next week."
Jamie Patterson had a triple and an RBI for Satsuma.
