Pirates take BCHS Christmas Tournament title

BAY MINETTE, Ala. – The Fairhope Pirates went 2-0 in the Baldwin County High Christmas Classic Saturday, capping the weekend with a 40-27 win over the hosting BCHS Tigers.

Donovan Dale scored 12 points and Hayden Harrelson 10 to lead Fairhope while Tripp Drummond and Lewis Hunter added eight each. Larry Rogers led the Tigers with 10 points.

The Fairhope win came a week after the Tigers defeated the Pirates at Fairhope, where FHS kept the normally high-scoring Tigers to 39 points, but came up too short offensively themsevles.

Saturday, the Pirates checked the Tigers' fast pace again, but also got off to a better start and added to the lead, particularly in the third quarter.

“We defended well and felt like we had some shots in the third quarter that alleviated some pressure,” said Fairhope head coach Andy Ryan. “I thought our kids handled their pressure pretty well. Coach (Lorenzo) Hunter does such a good job of putting together a high-pressure defense, we feel fortunate to get a win. Any time you get a win at Baldwin County High School, you have to feel pretty good and I'm proud of the kids for getting it done.”

Fairhope led 9-4 after the first quarter and 19-11 at the half. The Pirates then held off a strong mid-quarter Tiger run in the third to out score BCHS 12-6. BCHS had pulled to within two points when Drummond and Harrelson hit back-to-back, unanswered 3-pointers to preserve and extend the lead. The Tigers won the fourth period 10-9, but it would not be enough. The Fairhope spread delay kept the clock moving. Both teams struggled early at the free-throw line.

Earlier in the day, West Florida Tech defeated Foley 74-47. Demarcus Bingham had 11 points and Ja'vonte Long 10 for the Lions. Jeremy Pogue had 19 and Marcus Rivers 16 for the WFHS Jaguars out of the Pensacola area.

All-Tournament players included Drummond and Jackson of Fairhope, Mario Butler and Rogers of Baldwin County, Demarcus Bingham and Alontai Adams of Foley and Pogue and Rivers of West Florida Tech.

On Friday, Baldwin County defeated the West Florida Jaguars 77- 60. Mario Butler scored 18 points, Xavier Dortch 13 and Larry Rogers 12 for the Tigers (9-3), West Florida was paced by Jeremy Pogue with 20 points.

Fairhope then topped Foley 61-44 in the second game Friday. Drummond scored 20 points, Donovan Dale 11 and Jerome Jackson 10 for Fairhope (10-4).

The Pirates led by 16 points by the end of the first half. Foley’s Rafael Adams scored 16 points to lead the Lions.

Fairhope is taking part in the Big Orange Classic in Hoover while Baldwin County takes part in Booker T. Washington Christmas tournament in Escambia County, Fla. Both tournaments wrap up today.
