Pirates, Toros lead the week's football region standings

FAIRHOPE, Alabama — The Fairhope Pirates are in the lead in Class 6A Region 2 after a 4-0 start with three wins over region foes in head  coach Adam Winegarden's first season on the eastern shore.

The Pirates are ahead of second-place Daphne (3-1, 3-0), third-place Dothan (3-1, 2-1) and Foley (3-1, 2-1) in the first region standings, released on Wednesday morning by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Robertsdale and Baldwin County, both 0-4 overall and 0-3 in region play, are the bottom two teams in the region. Enterprise and Northview, both 2-2 overall and 1-2 in region play, are the fifth and sixth teams.

In Class 5A Region 1, the Spanish Fort Toros are in sole possession of first place with a 4-0 overall record and 3-0 region record. The Vigor Wolves (3-1, 3-0), St. Paul's Saints (3-1, 3-0) and Faith Academy Rams (2-2, 2-1) round out the top four in the region. Gulf Shores (1-3, 0-3) is currently sixth in the region behind LeFlore (1-3, 1-2), with B.C. Rain and Williamson at the bottom with identical 0-4 records. 

The Bayside Academy Admirals (2-2, 2-1) are currently fourth in Class 3A Region 1 behind T.R. Miller (4-0, 3-0), Straughn (3-1, 3-0) and W.S. Neal (3-1, 2-1). 

The Fairhope Pirates and the Spanish Fort Toros square off at SFHS this Friday at 7 p.m. in a battle of region leaders. 

The top four teams in each region reach the state playoffs at the end of the season.
