MOBILE – Ashton Johnson struck out the last four batters he faced and took the win for Fairhope as the Pirates topped Robertsdale 9-6 in the championship game of the 12th Annual Hank Aaron High School Classic Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
It was an ‘All-Baldwin’ final as Fairhope and Robertsdale won their semifinal matchups earlier.
“Ashton clutched up with just a great performance on the mound,” Fairhope head coach Stu Fuller said. “He did a great job and our hitters swung the bats better for us and got it done. We did a good job of overcoming adversity the whole tournament getting behind some, adjusting, then coming back.”
The championship appearance and victory were dual firsts for the Pirates who become the seventh team to win the title. “I’m really proud of the kids they battled and this is something great to build on and hopefully get better each time out.”
The Golden Bears made their second trip to the championship Monday but, as they did in 2006, RHS finished as the tournament runner up.
“Just little things hurt us,” said RHS head coach Kevin Raley. “We played good. But we needed to play great and to beat Fairhope, you’re going to have to get the details right. But I’m not taking anything away from my kids. I’m so proud of these players, you know. We’re 4-1. It’s early in the year and we’re playing well. We’re going to take some time off and get ready for the next one.”
The Pirates out hit the Bears 11-7 and scored two runs in four different innings. FHS led 5-1 going into the bottom of the fourth. RHS bounced back with four runs to tie it 5-5.
But Fairhope added four, while RHS only plated one more as temperatures dipped.
In the semifinals, FHS advanced with a 2-1 victory over UMS-Wright while RHS won their semifinal over Thomasville 2-1.
Fairhope’s Daryl Norris received the Jake Peavy MVP Award after going 2-for-3 with an RBI in the championship game. In the semifinals he fanned 11 UMS-Wright Bulldogs in a two-hit complete game performance on the mound.
The Golden Bears' Austin Pittman received the Chris Boyett Silver Slugger award and RHS teammate James Potter, who had 21 tourney strikeouts and the win over Thomasville in Monday's semifinal, received the Larry Andrews Pitcher Award.
Murphy head coach Brian Giles was presented with the Joe Toomey Coach's Award for displaying the highest degree of morals and ethics during the tournament.
Earlier on Monday, Baker defeated Gulf Shores 3-0.
