Pirates win Section 1 golf tournament

POINT CLEAR, Ala. — Mason Seaborn won the 6A Section 1 golf tournament’s individual medal with a 2-under-par 70 and led the Fairhope High Pirates to the team title at Lakewood Golf Club in Point Clear Monday.

The Pirates’ winning 304 score was five strokes better than second-place McGill-Toolen which came in at 309. Fairhope moves on to the sub-state at Heron Lakes Tuesday along with the Yellow Jackets and Baker (320) and Satsuma (322).

Fairhope coach Jeff Hauge said he was proud of his team for not being satisfied with just getting by to the next level and was pleased with how his players took on the challenge to win the title. He added that Seaborn’s amazing round was a “testament” to the character of the University of Louisiana-Monroe bound senior.

“Mason Seaborn came in with the only under par round of the whole day,” he said. “That’s pretty strong on this golf course. That's a testament to the hard work he’s put in over the past year, especially. And to overcome that

ACL (knee) injury like he did, we're all just very proud of him."

Hauge said being blessed with strong leadership is an important factor in the playoffs.

“My two seniors, Mason and Bailey Kimmett have really taking over their leadership roles and are doing a great job of helping the younger players. Bailey is the stabilizing influence behind the scenes. Real cerebralgolfer and likes the strategy of team competition. Their leadership has been key for us.

“Before we came out here, we talked about not just qualifying for sub-state. We wanted to win this thing and they and the whole team responded. This is our first section title ever. And to do it here and challenged by good teams, is a good way to go forward.”

Kimmitt finished with an 82 while underclassmen Tyler Baggerly, Alex Green and Walker Holden each shot a 79.

Two players from McGill-Toolen, Dylan Cruthirds and David Saab as well as two from Mary Montgomery, Hunter Tauble and Nathan Sedgeway qualified for unattached sub-state play.

In 5A, the Spanish Fort and Gulf Shores boys both advanced to the sub-state round. The South sub-state tournament will be held at the Sylacauga Country Club on Monday. The Dolphins finished second in the Section 1 tournament at Azalea City last week, while the Toros finished third. Colin Anderson of Gulf Shores and Jesse Redman tied for third with a score of 77 in the tournament.
