Pitching key for 6A No. 4 Fairhope

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — With a pair of top-performing pitchers back from rehab, the No. 4-ranked Fairhope Lady Pirates look to a strong finish in the second half of their 6A Area 3 schedule.

Senior Farish Beard was out of the rotation for three weeks and sophomore Grey Adams for four.

Adams completed her second complete game since her return with a 3-0 home win Tuesday over 6A Area 4 leader Satsuma. Beard is also back in form posting double digit strikeouts in three-straight return victories. Carrying the load while Beard and Grey were out was Alison Augustine.

Fairhope coach Jonathan Heflin said the entire team seems energized with a full staff back.

“Having Grey back is a huge boost for us,” he said. “She is getting stronger with every start back and we are really happy to have her back in the circle. Having two pitchers that can go out and take over and dominate a game is a big advantage going into the last half of the season. It also eases the pressure on our entire pitching staff — Farish, Grey, and Alison — because they don't feel like they have to be perfect. They work together to help each other out and pick each other up.”

Against the Gators, Adams allowed two hits and struck out 11, Brooke Lennicx drove in a pair of runs and Hannah Qualls added an RBI as Fairhope improved to 17-2 overall.

In the double header against Reidland, Ky. and Franklin-Simpson, Ky. FHS won both games. Beard struck out 19 in a 9-0 shutout in the opener against Reidland. Augustine started the nightcap against Franklin-Simpson pitching 3 innings with Adams going three in relief in a 15-4 six-inning win.

Adams also effected an in-the-park grandslam homerun off a triple, and advanced to home on a throwing error with the bases loaded.

Fairhope will travel to 5A Area 2 leader Spanish Fort on Monday for a 7 p.m. Varsity start. The 6A Area 3 schedule resumes for Fairhope on Tuesday at home against the Foley Lady Lions at 7 p.m.
