Ike Waite Pitman, 87, a native of Mobile and a longtime resident of Fairhope, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008.

He grew up working in his family's business, Pitman Grocery and Dry Goods, in Fairhope.

He attended Auburn University, where he was the president of his freshman class, and he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and was the president of his pledge class and a life loyal Sig.

He was a World War II veteran as a navigator and bombardier in the 97th Bomb Group.

He worked in sales and management with Neptune Meter Company for over 25 years.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Pitman Berglin and brother Cecil Pitman.

Survivors include a son, James Ivy (Barbara) Pitman of Nashville, Tenn.; daughter, Melinda Pitman (Tony) Melachrino of Ormond Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Maria (Kevin) Hayworth, Julie (Chris) Schmidt, all of Ormond Beach, Fla., Rachel (Chase) Neal, James Pitman, Andrew Pitman, all of Nashville, Tenn.; five great-grandchildren, Gaston and Sam Hayworth, Maria, Ryan and Leah Schmidt; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Graveside services and interment will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 at Colony Cemetery, with Franklin Smart officiating.

The family would like to give thanks for the good care he received while he was a resident at Robertsdale Health Care, and from Covenant Hospice, as well as the personal care from Jeanne Henry.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the hospice of your choice.
