MAGNOLIA SPRINGS, Ala. — Next week will mark the second month in a row that representatives from Riviera Utilities will visit a Magnolia Springs Town Council meeting.
In October, Josh Roberts of Riviera gave a presentation explaining the utility company’s upcoming tree-trimming procedures. During the meeting, he pointed out that tree limbs need to be kept at least 10 feet from power lines because any contact with them could result in a fire. He also said that tree trimming has improved over the years, with an arborist on staff to maintain the integrity of pruned trees when possible. The presentation came in anticipation of pruning planned for the town in the coming weeks.
During Tuesday’s November Council workshop, Magnolia Springs Community Association President Virginia Stone said that she had received numerous calls from residents with concerns about the integrity of the town trees, particularly along the Oak Street canopy.
“What would make this time any different than the other times”” asked Councilman Ben Dykema, pointing out that Riviera trims trees in the town every few years.
But Stone said those calling her had expressed an interest in learning more about the possibility and cost involved with underground electrical wires.
In further discussion, council members debated those issues.
“I think it’s a lot more of an endeavor than people realize,” Councilman Bob Holk said.
However, Stone pointed out that the only request is for residents to have an opportunity to meet with Riveria and have the opportunity to ask questions about the issue.
“If we give them information, they can make informed decisions,” she said.
The council agreed to consult with Riviera and plan the opportunity, which is scheduled to take place during the November meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19.
