FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Poet Jeanie Thompson, author of “The Seasons Bear Us,” is coming to lower Alabama for two events: Sept. 4 for First Friday ArtWalk, from 6 to 8 p.m. in at Page & Palette, 32 S. Section St. in Fairhope; and Sept. 8, reading and signing at Satori Coffee House, 5460 Old Shell Road in Mobile, at 6 p.m.
Her newest of four collections of poetry is arranged in seasons, and is about the connection between writing and the seasons, she said.
The title is taken from a quote by James Wright: “…writing of any kind, as long as it is done for its own sake, is a matter of joining the seasons and following their movements … They move, as we move, from place to place. As we move, we carry them, and they carry us … the seasons bear us.”
Thompson said she’s seen the overlap in her own relationships.
“The connection here is going through the cycle of the year and, I think, the cycles in our lives,” she said. “All of the poems in the book touch something to do with my life — a lot of the subject is about love, whether it be romantic love, or the love of a mother to her son or the love of a place.”
She said that just as the seasons change, so does love in its many different facets.
“The movement of love is not going to stay the same,” she said. “When I put that book together, I wanted to reflect that.”
Thompson is a teacher at Spalding University in Louisville, Ky. She is the executive director of the Alabama Writers’ Forum and her published books include “The Remembered Gate: Memoirs by Alabama Writers;” “White for Harvest: New and Selected Poems;” “Witness;” “Litany for a Vanishing Landscape,” with photography by Wayne Sides; “How To Enter the River;” and “Lotus and Psalm.”
