Police seeking woman suspected of stealing Daphne resident’s purse, and possibly, identity

DAPHNE, Ala.—The Daphne Police Department reports that on Dec. 14 a Daphne woman’s Chevy Tahoe was broken into while parked outside a local business, and that the suspect ultimately attempted to steal more than $75,000 from the woman’s business account.

Days after the theft, an unknown person visited two Wells Fargo branches in the Birmingham area and attempted to cash checks from the victim’s purse, which was stolen from the car, police stated; the checks were on a business account of a company for which the victim is the vice president.

Daphne Police Detective Mike Gorum said authorities do not know the name of the suspect.

“We’re hoping that someone recognizes her from the photos,” he said, referring to images the police released.

According to Gorum, the suspect attempted to withdraw $75,000, but when the bank representative told her the matter would have to sit and be cleared for 10 days because of the size of the transaction, she walked out. She did obtain $800 in cash from the bank, Gorum said.

“The (suspect) went in there and had the victim’s driver’s license and social security card and wore a wig to make herself look like the victim,” Gorum said.

“I’m thinking that they wanted to get as far away from this area as possible,” he said of the suspect. I don’t know what Birmingham would do. That’s one of the things that’s kind of intriguing about this case.”

Bank video obtained from Wells Fargo in Birmingham and shows a female — apparently wearing a blonde wig — cashing the stolen check. The victim has blonde hair and is of similar height as the suspect, police said.

The suspect’s car can also be seen in the bank photos.

“We believe that it is a black (Volkswagen) Jetta,” Gorum said. “It’s probably three or four years old.”

Police stated that the victim is very concerned that she was targeted in this fashion and has no idea who could have done this to her.

“They broke out the window and got her information,” Gorum said, noting that most of the time when a purse is stolen, the suspect gets what is needed out of it and leaves it, but this time the purse was brought to Birmingham. “This is something that took a lot more thought and a lot more work to put it together.”
