Possible tornado damage reported in Central Baldwin

ELSANOR, Ala. — A possible tornado caused damage overnight Sunday in the Elsanor area.

“There’s definitely been damage,” said Leigh Ann Ryals, Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency director. “The question is whether or not the damage was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds and the National Weather Service will have to make that determination.”

Ryals said Monday morning that her office was still out assessing the damage along Greek Cemetery Road in Elsanor and officials from the National Weather Service were scheduled to be out around noon on Monday.

Reports of damage on Monday included:

— Several trees and roof damage around one home.

— A mobile home was reportedly moved from its foundation. A shed on the property was completely destroyed.

— A vacant mobile home was reported to be completely destroyed by the storm. No injuries were reported.

— Roof damage was reported and metal debris scattered at the Elsanor Airport.

The damage was reported overnight to the National Weather Service.

One minor injury was also reported overnight, Ryals said. A woman in the community reportedly hurt her foot when she stepped on glass. She was treated at the scene.

Ryals said her office had not received any reports of damage from a possible tornado Monday morning in the Gateswood area.

“There were television reporters out this morning reporting what they saw, but we have not received any calls,” she said. “We also called and talked to the Gateswood Fire Chief and he said he had not received any calls. That doesn’t mean that there wasn’t one. We may know more later today.”

Areas of Baldwin County were under a tornado watch until 1 p.m. Monday.
