GULF SHORES, Ala. — American Legion Post 44 invites the public to honor fallen heroes and those continuing to serve to a Memorial Day service at Miller Memorial Cemetery in Gulf Shores on Monday, at 10 a.m.
Members will be distributing poppies today at the Gulf Shores Walmart and at the Dollar General Store.
Red poppies are an emblem of sacrifice. In the spring of 1919, amidst complete devastation, the poppies bloomed in abundance on the battlefields of France where so many of our men had fallen in battle.
A replica of this poppy has become the Memorial Flower of the American Legion and Auxiliary.
Traditionally, the American Legion Auxiliary distributes poppies on the Saturday before Memorial Day in memory of our battlefield losses.
This is an opportunity for the public to make a donation to help in the significant work of the American Legion and Auxiliary, as well as an opportunity to pay tribute to all who died in service, by wearing a poppy on Poppy Day.
One hundred percent of the donations collected for the poppies are distributed to the local welfare relief for servicemen and women and their families.
The memorial poppies are made of red crepe paper, by hand, by disabled veterans in hospitals and poppy workrooms in 40 states.
The workers receive pay for each poppy made. The material is furnished free by American Legion Posts.
More than 25 million poppies made by disabled veterans are distributed by volunteer Auxiliary members nationwide.
More than $300,000 is paid annually to needy and disabled veterans for making the poppies.
“We enjoy this opportunity every year to meet so many people that want to express their appreciation to veterans,” said Jane Rankin, the unit president.
Also, American Legion Post 44 veterans will be helping the Auxiliary and distribute invitations to the Gulf Shores Memorial Service on Monday, at Miller Memorial Cemetery at 10 a.m.
Legionnaires consider it is an honor and privilege to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in the Great Wars.
Those who serve now and have served in the Armed Forces are no less committed to protect our nation then were the men who signed the Declaration of Independence.
They pledge to maintain the commitment and honor that was declared over two centuries ago when America first fought for her freedom.
The public is also invited to an open house at American Legion 44 at 6781 Gulf Shores Parkway following the ceremony until 2 p.m.
The Post will be serving hot dogs and chips.
