Prayer breakfast to focus on tourism in Bay Minette

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Tourism will be the central focus of the Bay Minette Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast on Monday.

That focus will feature guest speaker and RideYellow Founder Mary Trufant providing an update on the charity-bicycle event’s June 18 success and economic impacts, she said in a telephone interview.

That update will include a participation of 685 cyclists at the annual event, Trufant said.

“Each year we have more riders and (they) donate more money to the community,” she said. “It’s a great economic impact, and we’re showcasing an amazing city.”

Monday’s update will also include a report of RideYellow’s donation of $75,000 to Camp-Rap-a-Hope, USA Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital, and LiveStrong — all of which benefit area cancer survivors.

During Monday’s breakfast, Trufant will share her experience of dealing with Bay Minette officials to bring the yearly fundraiser about.

“What they do is pretty unheard of,” she said, citing police escorts and food donations. “Y’all roll out the red carpet for charity events.”

Trufant also said that her appearance at the breakfast may build area awareness of the RideYellow event and build networking opportunities between the prayer group and the cyclist event.

“We want to let the community embrace us,” she said. “That means churches and families.”

Prayer Breakfast coordinator the Rev. Edna Dixon said she believes Trufant’s presentation will be beneficial.

“We will pray for tourists to come back and spend money, stay and eat,” she said in a telephone interview.

Dixon said that group prayer has more energy, no matter how outgoing or shy participants might be.

“It brings ministers, church leaders and prayer warriors together,” she said of Monday’s event. “You don’t have to pray aloud. It’s just a community effort.”

The Bay Minette Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast is slated for 7:30-8:30 a.m. Monday at the North Baldwin Infirmary Wellness Center, located at 2515 N. Hand Ave.
