FOLEY — Forward City residents can head to the Foley Senior Center today if they’d like to take part in a service honoring 9-11 victims and their families.

The service, deemed “Awaken America,” kicks off at noon and will be presented by Abiding Love Fellowship in Foley.

“It will consist of patriotic prayer events and will last about 35-40 minutes,” Abiding Love Pastor Gigi McBride said in a telephone interview.

Those events will include a Pledge of Allegience led by Foley Police Chief David Wilson, such patriotic songs ans “God Bless America” and prayers for local leaders and first responders led by Pastor Alan Sims.

“We’ll also pray for the families of 9-11 victims and survivors,” McBride said.

She explained that today’s service is just one of many looking back on the 2001 terrorist attack on the United States.

“Every state, every county in the nation will be holding a service,” McBride said.

In Baldwin County, Foley’s service will be one of two that McBride knows of.

“There will also be one in Daphne,” she said.

McBride explained that preparing for the event has taken some planning.

“We’ve been working on it for about six weeks,” she said.

But while it’s the first 9-11 service Abiding Love has opened to the city, it’s not the first for the church.

“We actually have had them in our church before,” McBride said.

They usually draw quite a few participants.

“We usually have 150-200 people,” McBride said.

But the main focus is the service’s inspiration.

“We never want to forget one of the most changing events in our nation’s history,” McBride said. “It brought the awareness that life is so precious.”
