After Spanish Fort’s thrilling overtime win over Gulf Shores on Friday night, the Class 5A, Region 1 title race is starting to take shape like many expected it to.
At the beginning of the season it looked like Spanish Fort and Vigor, 2008’s top Region 1 teams, would lead the way in the region. As expected, the Toros and Wolves have started the season 2-0 and both are in the state’s 5A top 10.
Vigor was the only team to beat Spanish Fort last season, and they did it twice: once in the regular season and once in the playoffs.
Spanish Fort hosts the Wolves in week eight on Friday, October 16. Both teams should be 7-0 at that time. Expect a doozy of a game with the region title on the line.
Despite losing to Spanish Fort, Gulf Shores could still play a role in determining the Region 1 winner. The energized Dolphins, under the leadership of energetic head coach Mark Freeman, play at Vigor in two weeks. A Gulf Shores upset, followed by a Spanish Fort loss to the Wolves, would throw a wrench into the Region 1 gears.
