DAPHNE, Ala. — Fourth-graders have been learning about volleyball in P.E. They have learned to serve, hit, and volley it in the air.  Did you know that the game of volleyball was originally called “mintonette” and was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan?

In Alabama history, students are learning about the first person to find America. That person was Christopher Columbus. He was looking for a trade route to Asia for the king and queen of Spain. He made four voyages. Christopher Columbus was not the first person to dispute the belief that the world was flat, as was most widely believed. This great honor rightfully belongs to the scholar Aristotle, who showed that the earth casts a shadow upon the moon during an eclipse that is spherical in shape.

In Project Jubilee, students are learning about the stock market. If you buy some of the company, you could get some money back if the company does well.  They are participating in the stock market game where teams of students are working together to invest a virtual $100,000. They have until the first week of December to see how they fare against other students throughout the state of Alabama. Thank you to all the parents who sent in donations to help pay for our teams to participate.

Jubilee students are also learning about kumihimo, a Japanese form of braid-making. Cords and ribbons are made by interlacing strands.Students use a round board and some yarn or crochet thread. Students have their own kumihimo board they keep in their boxes. Whenever they have a few minutes, they start braiding the threads together.
