FOLEY, Ala. - The Health and Housing Fair hosted by Project Rebound, an organization striving to help residents affected by the oil spill from April 2010, offered residents a chance to receive medical screenings and housing information and advise Tuesday at the Foley Civic Center.
The different vendors ranged from medical to housing to children's counseling; but this being the first event, Paige Rucker, Project Rebound state director, said the turnout was smaller than expected.
"It's been very slow surprisingly," she said at around noon. "This is the first one, so we're kind of testing the waters."
Many of the vendors commented that the turnout was decent and people have had many questions regarding their options on health and housing.
"My son has had 10 or 12 people that he's talked to," Jim Jennings, of Pendulum Properties, said.
Bob Pitts, of Workforce Housing Alliance, said the alliance approached Project Rebound to host the fair and combine because it would "offer more services to more people."
"A lot of people have questions about how to buy a home, how to fix their credit so they can buy a home, and other stuff," Bob Pitts, of Workforce Housing Alliance, said. "It's more education. We're a one-stop education shop for people who want to be a home owner."
"We're getting calls regarding foreclosures, people about to lose their homes…We wanted to have the answers all in one room," Rucker said. "The people that came through have received great information."
Project Rebound helps those affected by the oil spill with emotional issues, financial struggles and personal problems, but Rucker said the organization has been receiving calls about housing issues.
The event was free to the public. There is another fair scheduled at the Bay Minette Civic Center June 30 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and one scheduled in Orange Beach July 7. Rucker said the dates may be rescheduled so the fair takes place on a Saturday and more residents can attend.
