A much publicized plan to build a performing arts center in the large green zone on the Faulkner Fairhope campus ignores student and environmental needs. Student enrollment at Faulkner is booming, creating a demand for more full-time faculty, more parking spaces and more classrooms. Moreover, students need a new activity center to replace the one demolished.
A new science building, announced with much fanfare, has not materialized. Recreational facilities are non-existent. The green zone that covers the southern half of the campus at least offers open space allowing freedom of movement.
Bulldozing the green zone to make way for a performing arts complex is a minus for students whose true needs are ignored. I do not hear a public outcry demanding the sacrifice of trees and open space. Downtown Fairhope is already congested. As one of the city’s most precious assets, the Faulkner Fairhope campus should not be put up for grabs.
