FAIRHOPE, Ala. — A 26-year-old Point Clear resident was arrested last week on two charges of burglary, and police think possibly he is connected to several recent burglaries on a mile-long stretch of Scenic Highway 98 south of the Marriott Grand Hotel Resort, Golf Course and Spa, according to the Fairhope Police Department.
“The crime was very similar to a string of burglaries that had occurred in the same area starting in November of 2008 and continuing until January of 2009, a series of crimes which came to be known locally as the Point Clear burglaries,” a FPD news release stated Monday.
Anthony Andrews Knight was arrested early Wednesday morning, Feb. 24, by FPD officers, following their response to a residential burglary alarm at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday in the 17000 block of Scenic Highway 98, where they found a forced entry into the home, according to the news release.
Evidence at the scene established details about the suspect and probable cause to believe Knight was responsible for the burglary, the news release stated.
Knight was detained at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday and arrested on two felony charges of burglary third degree and two misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief in the third degree. He was transferred Friday to the Baldwin County Correction Center in Bay Minette, where he remained in jail at press time with a bond of $10,300.
“Subsequent investigation by detectives of the FPD has tentatively tied Knight to several other burglaries in that area,” the news release stated.
The FPD would not provide any additional information about evidence allegedly linking Knight to those other burglaries.
According to information at the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Web site, Knight has been booked seven other times at the correction center since 2002, with six of those arrests for burglary in the third degree. Information on the Web shows his address as a residence on Antioch Church Road in Point Clear, near the intersection of County Road 32 and Scenic Highway 98.
Between November and January, more than two dozen burglaries were reported in the 17000 block of Scenic Highway 98, according to the FPD.
“We’ve had a marked increase in the number of burglaries in the past few months,” FPD Sgt. Craig Sawyer said in January. “In a three-month period, that number is unheard of.”
Most of the break-ins involved jimmied doors or busted windows, but five also had pulled or cut phone lines to disable alarm systems, Sawyer said.
The incident report for the Tuesday burglary states that one glass door window and two infrared cameras were broken at the residence on Scenic Highway 98.
“We’re hoping that this will clear up a lot of the burglaries in that area,” Sawyer said Monday.
