BAY MINETTE — Baldwin County residents have three weeks to voice their opinions about the future of sprawling Delta nature area Live Oak Landing.
Jade Consulting of Fairhope has created a master plan for the area that includes a restaurant, a ‘50s-style camper village and even a bed and breakfast.
The master plans are on display at the county administrative office in Bay Minette, the Central Annex in Robertsdale and at the satellite courthouses in Fairhope and Foley. The quickest way to view the plans is to go online at www.baldwincountyal.gov and click on the Live Oak Landing link on the right side of the page.
After viewing the master plan, people are asked to complete a questionnaire. The form includes an area for comments on the master plan as well as suggestions for future uses of the park. The comments and questionnaires must be submitted by Feb. 15.
Live Oak Landing is located on Highway 225, just north of Interstate 65. It is adjacent to Bicentennial Park. The combined parks encompass around 1,500 acres.
The master plan calls for a variety of improvements to some areas and minimal changes to most of the nature areas. An Indian mound inside the park will be preserved. A 5.5-mile multiuse trail will wind through the park. A pair of optional bridges over wetlands area could connect it with Bicentennial Park.
Plans call for a bed and breakfast to be built near the park entrance. A rustic restaurant would have seating both inside as well as outdoor, overlooking the river. There will eventually be 16 rental cottages near the river, built in four phases of four cottages. The existing docks will be rebuilt and/or restored. The upper boathouse will include an observation deck on the roof.
The existing store will be remodeled and upgraded. Part of plan will include a themed village — ‘50s aluminum camper trailers set up as a permanent area. Nearby would be a resort-style swimming pool, complete with hot tub. Around the pond, there will be a dozen picnic shelters to offer park goers a little shade when dining.
The Baldwin County Commission purchased Live Oak Landing in August 2012 for around $3 million to protect and preserve the coastal habitat. The landing is open seven days a week from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m.
